I.

Black blood spewing from her womb
covetous children frolicking in corporate toxins
her ocean blue breast milk
curdled in clots of afterbirth.

Her ovaries won't recycle...oxygen smothered
with slick finger prints of hesitation
while suckling’s wash breathless on sea shores
we live to ignore our fate.

Somehow our greatest fear
is not the devastation
for the current and coming generation
Word on the street...

ARE NOT the plans for the ocean life that will cease,

We knew we had to help and even though we can't do much from where we are, we cou...ld still do something. I'm 14 and Nathan is 11. If kids can do it, anyone can.We made a sign that said "FISH DIED, FISHERS CRIED, BP LIED, OUR EARTH IS FRIED" and used it to stop cars on the road. If they stopped we gave them a list of BP brands, urging them to boycott all of them.

A dancer from New York, I am in Chicago for a long weekend, staying in a suburb without a car and not in charge of my own schedule. I knew there was an action in Chicago, but I could not get to it, so I decided to take what action I could manage in the circumstances. I distributed flyers that I downloaded from the website at the local commuter train station just before a train was to arrive. Rather to my surprise, almost everyone took a flyer and most people thanked me. The railway officials did not chase me away either. When the train pulled out, I moved to a large supermarket. There, I had a very different experience. People in Seattle organized a "flash mob" action and invited people to participate through facebook, blogs, and email. In a busy park on this sunny afternoon, a woman stood up in the middle of a large open area and opened a black umbrella over her head with "StopGulfOilDisaster.org" painted on it in white letters. This was the signal for other participants to join in. Michael Jackson's Earth Song was playing through a loud sound system. Seemingly out of nowhere, 20 other people appeared, taking off their top layer of clothing to reveal white t-shirts they'd written and painted on expressing why they decided to act on the 100th day of the oil disaster. As people stood in a circle with their t-shirts facing out, passersby stopped and others in the park came closer to watch. One person in the flash mob went around the circle and painted an oil-streaked tear on each participant's face. Everyone dispersed after the song, with some of us meeting up afterwards to talk about the oil disaster and connect people with the Emergency Committee.

One thing we learned from the variety of shirts people created, was the many deeply felt reasons people are angry and heartbroken about this catastrophe. Sentiments ranged from outrage about sea turtles being burned alive, to philosophical quotes about what it means to be alive and connected to nature, to condemnations of what the capitalist system is doing to the planet, to support for the people and ecosystems of the Gulf Coast.

World Can't Wait invited the community at large to come mark the 100th day in downtown Berkeley, with a speakout and rally at the construction site where BP's new "research" facility is being built. About 35 people took part during the 90 minutes we stood along the busy street, our signs and posters and displays posted all along the chain link fence. Quite a few media reporters and cameras showed up as well. Coverage showed up so far on AP and NPR, on all 3 local TV news channels, and in the Daily Californian.

The edge of today's message of course was the disaster in the Gulf, and during the speak out World Can't Wait spent a lot of mike time telling everyone about the work and the words of the Emergency Committee to Stop the Gulf Oil Disaster. Black sticky "oil" dripped all over the fence and posters, some protesters dipped their hands in it, and the (stuffed animals) wildlife specimens tied to the fence were covered in the goo as well. Community people were heard -- a lot of people stepped to the mike to voice their outrage and heartbreak at what BP and governmental handling have done to NOT solve the crisis and several talked about the need for the people, the public, to make demands and real solutions. The crowd chimed in with different stories exposing the criminal handling of the Gulf disaster -- how the clean-up is using prison labor, the terrible dangers of the use of dispersants. A woman health professional criticized the apathy of too much of the public in a world demanding urgent attention to urgent problems.

Then there was the particular outrage that right here in Berkeley, BP has bought its way into UC and will be doing private, and quite secret, research while availing itself of the resources and prestige of the public university. The $500 million gift BP gave to the University of California is turning into the new "Energy Biosciences Institute." Here, the BP-UC contract will bring BP onto the UC campus to work on genetically engineered agrofuels ("biofuels") and microbes for enhanced oil and coal production. This caused huge controversy back in 2007 with many professors and students in an uproar against it -- pointing at the "Faustian" corruption of science and research, the corporatization of the university, the dangers of this kind of biotech work -- but UC had gone ahead, and now the building is going up.

Community people spoke out about this, too. One woman who's been following the BP-Berkeley relationship all along raised some chilling concerns about the hazards of biotech research without sufficient safeguard systems (including when we happen to sit on a major earthquake faultline!) -- and she also predicted that BP's facility will by its nature be seen as a high-security site (security clearances? guards?), a strange situation indeed to introduce into campus life! Another activist brought up the juxtaposition of John Yoo still teaching at the Berkeley Law school, while BP is bringing its corporate science on campus (which will by the contract include letting BP scientists have the status of tenured faculty, teach classes, etc.)

Later that night hours after the rally, the chain link fence was still plastered with the "100 DAYS OF OUTRAGE!" posters and signs we'd left behind. Passerbys coming and going past it headed for nearby restaurants could be seen stopping to read the posters, pointing at the bulldozers and excavation -- probably most of those conversations were about BP and the devastation in the Gulf, BP and its biotech research coming to UC Berkeley...

100 Days of Outrage In and Around New Orleans

The 100 days of outrage began at 9am, with 15 us of holding our 8 foot long black banner – The People Must Act to Stop the Gulf Oil Catastrophe - 100 Days of Outrage – in the street in front of the Joint Unified Command Headquarters (BP and all the US government agencies involved in the oil disaster) in downtown New Orleans as commuters drove by. We then held a press conference and speak out – the theme was this crisis is not over! A number of folks took the bullhorn and spoke about why they were outraged on this 100th day, beginning with Fredrick-Douglass Knowles reading of the first 20 or so stanzas of the collective poem marking the 100th day of the disaster that he organized online (which has grown to over 200 stanzas!).

As the speakout was taking place, we took snapshots of everyone there, one-by-one, holding the same florescent orange sign: “Gulf Oil Disaster - 100 Days of Outrage”, and making a brief statement about their thoughts on the day.

Afterward, a group of us went to a café on Frenchman Street in the Faubourg Marigny for ice tea (extremely hot here) and more conversation and snapshots of people we met there. Then it was on to the fish market at Westwego, on the west bank of the Mississippi just south and west of New Orleans. There was talked to vendors about the devastation wrecked on the fishing industry by the oil gusher – about half the shops there were closed because fishing, shrimping and oystering has been shut down. There too, more people wanted to have their pictures taken and make their comments on the 100 days.

Finally we drove south, to the small fishing town of Jean Lafitte (named after an early 18th Century pirate based in New Orleans) on Bayou Barataria in Jefferson Parish, to get a first hand look at the bayous and inner coastal waterways threatened by this catastrophe.

Union Square is a major historic NYC gathering place. The first thing we needed to do was secure an appropriate location for our photographer whose big ring flash ran on power. Due to the nature of the event, we felt it was wrong to rent a generator, most of which run on gasoline. We couldn't find a local business or building willing to share electricity. Not easily deterred, we spotted an outlet camouflaged by brush on a Con Ed box in the Square's garden area.

We used sidewalk chalk to direct people over to where the event was set up, near a small and beautiful fountain, which made a great backdrop since our event was about water to begin with. We provided "oil," recycled poster board and markers. The creativity and profound thoughts of the people provided the rest. One woman even brought stuffed animals and dipped them in the fake oil, then put on a puppet show for passers by. Our official "studio hours" were from 5:30-7:00. But, we had some waiting their turns until we ran out of poster board at 8:00. We have a total of 115 portraits which we'll soon have on display here.

WBAI news as well as NBC news stopped and talked to us.

While we reached many, it was somewhat discouraging to see large groups of beautiful and aloof people just walking by, too busy to stop or listen or care about what was going on in their ocean. But overall, the event was a success and we look forward to finding new ways to use art in activism which is a great and very productive manner in which to spread our message.

Today 6 people gathered by the Kalamazoo River in Kalamazoo to protest the million gallon oil spill from Enbridge's pipeline several days ago. There was a larger protest in Marshall, Mi where the spill originated. One mother with her daughter heard about the action on local TV news, and came to express her outrage at this careless accident. She played and fished on the river growing up and demands the River be restored and cleaned up. We protested in solidarity with the people around the world who are impacted by oil disasters and to save our ecosystems from capitalist greed. -Joetta

In Philly we got out 200 copies of the mission statement. We were at the Apple Store opening which had a line of hundreds of people on one of Philadelphia's most busiest streets. Three of us were dressed as tar balls (in garbage bags) had signs--see attached pictures. Over a dozen people took pictures of our " Cleaning up the Gulf Oil Spill There Is No App For That," sign, including people who were taking pictures of the opening for Apple. A couple people gave us their cameras to take pictures of them in front of Apple Store. A lot of people had positive reactions to what we are doing & a number of people especially youth had a lot of questions about how bad the spill was what BP/the government was doing, and isn't the spill over?

BERKELEY, CA (KGO) -- Protesters who are angry with BP about the gulf oil spill demonstrated at UC Berkeley Friday night against a joint project between the university and BP to build a new $500 million research site...Friday's protest was just one of many going on around the country. It's two purposes included reminding people that even though the leak in the gulf has been capped, the damage from the spill will linger for many years, and these protesters want UC Berkeley to rethink its research partnership with oil giant BP.

The demonstration marked the 100th day of the BP oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Black markings on stuffed animals were used to symbolize all the damage done to the environment and wildlife over the past three months.

The backdrop was the site where the new Helios Energy Research facility is under construction. It is a building that will house the Energy Biosciences Institute at UC Berkeley -- a project funded with $500 million from BP.

"We ask the public, given what BP's done to the Gulf of Mexico, why should it be trusted with science at the University of California?" protest organizer Stephanie Tang said...The UC/BP partnership has been hotly debated since its inception three years ago when some faculty worried corporate goals would be put ahead of academic freedom..."I don't care whether they're trying to do good or not. We need to get away from corporations because any good that they're trying to do is just for their bottom line," protester Mary Ann Thomas said...
